No to violence: Bukit Aman monitoring social media for hateful comments

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman will be monitoring social media accounts that are attempting to stir public anxiety and hatred following the recent attacks on national football players.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police would not hesitate to take action against any social media account holders who were believed to be stirring hatred towards the national football players.

"We will be monitoring these accounts and requesting the help of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

"We cannot leave any room for those who intend to take advantage of the situation and cause disturbances," he told reporters on Wednesday (May 8).

He said that based on their checks, an Instagram account bearing the name Muhammad Imran Suresh was a fake account.

"This account has been seen trying to cause disturbances and negative perceptions involving the acid attack on Faisal Halim," he said, adding that so far, no police reports have been lodged against this or any other accounts.

It was reported that the police are tracking down the owner of a social media account which uses the name Muhammad Imran Suresh in relation to a statement regarding the acid attack incident involving national footballer Faisal Halim.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was quoted by Bernama as saying the individual claimed to have information related to the incident.

Any individual with relevant information should come forward instead of issuing a statement as it may affect the investigation, Razarudin had said, reminding the public not to speculate as this could affect the probe.

Earlier, the owner of an Instagram account claimed that police had summoned him to help in the investigation of the acid attack.
